UniSport Australia is deeply saddened by the passing of UniSport Life Member, Alf Lazer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alf was an Emeritus Honorary Member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and one of the most influential figures in the history of university sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His sporting journey began during World War II at the Melbourne University Athletics Club, where he competed as a track-and-field athlete before becoming a team captain and lifelong club stalwart. He later earned a Blue in Athletics in 1952. Recognised by The University of Melbourne Council for more than six decades of dedicated service to the University\u2019s sporting community, Alf also played a central role in the management and development of Australian university sport at a national level. In 1956, he was honoured with the distinction of carrying the Olympic torch at the Melbourne Olympic Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a student experience quickly evolved into a lifelong commitment, with Alf devoting his career to the growth and advancement of university sport at institutional, national and international levels. His first international involvement came in 1973, when he attended the Universiade in Moscow as an Australian team official, marking the beginning of a lifelong association with FISU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of his exceptional service to sport, Alf was awarded The University of Melbourne Gold Medal, followed by his appointment to the Order of Australia in 1985.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alf\u2019s experience, leadership and unwavering enthusiasm saw him elected to the FISU Executive Committee, in addition to chairing the FISU Technical Committee for Squash from 2000 to 2007 and contributing to the Brisbane 1987 Universiade bid. He was also deeply involved in the delivery of international events, including the World University Squash Championships in Melbourne, where his hospitality was as memorable as his governance, welcoming visiting FISU officials from around the world into his home and preparing meals largely from produce grown in his own garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across both Summer and Winter World University Games, Alf was a constant and reassuring presence, always making time to visit Australian teams in the Athlete Village. A passionate supporter of athletics, he took great pride in following the performances of Australian student-athletes. He also helped foster camaraderie among officials, instigating a 5km race for team officials at Summer Universiades during the 1980s, a tradition that continued well into the late 2010s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through every role he held, Alf embodied the values of university sport and an enduring belief in sport\u2019s power to connect people across cultures and continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on Alf\u2019s lifetime of service, UniSport Australia CEO Mark Sinderberry highlighted the lasting influence of his work on university sport. \u201cAlf\u2019s leadership, generosity and commitment to the university sport sector have helped create opportunities for student-athletes across Australia and internationally, and his legacy will continue to shape the work of UniSport\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
